As a standard, pallet racking beams should be fitted with locking pins.

This is where forklift trucks or other mechanical aisle equipment are operating. The general purpose of the locking pin is to stop pallet racking beams from being accidentally dislodged by the forklift truck. It all boils down to health and safety.

Following this logic, any picking levels within a pallet racking installation accessed by forklift trucks should have locking pins even if those levels are not used for pallets.

If all the racking or long span shelving is being used and there is no risk of a fork truck dislodging a beam then locking pins are really an optional extra. It’s just always good to have some just in case because you never know when you’re going to need them. It’s always best to have plenty than to have none at all.
