Racking Inspections
Ensure your racking is compliant with health & safety legislation with regular pallet racking inspections from our SIERS qualified racking inspectors.
What are racking inspections are why are they important
Ensuring racking safety is essential for any company with a pallet racking system installed. Regular inspections by a qualified professional help maintain a safe warehouse environment. Depending on usage, racking surveys should be conducted at least annually, and in many cases, every six months.
While guidelines may seem vague, responsible companies typically implement routine internal walk-around inspections. In addition, they schedule professional external racking inspections—often referred to as SEMA inspections—on an annual or biannual basis. These inspections provide reassurance that the racking is being monitored for safety.
Our racking inspection ensures you are complying with legal requirements. All aspects of your pallet racking can be assessed, and our experts will be able to guide you on any safety improvements or potential risks with your current racking system.
What racking inspections usually include:
- A full inspection of your racking infrastructure to assess build quality and identify any damage or defects
- Assessment of loadings in line with manufacturers guidelines
- Recommendations and guidance on any damage observed
- Identification of risk of damage from manual handling equipment
- Highlighting any possible risks of injury to persons accessing the racking as a result of damage
Why do you need a rack inspection?
- Compliance & Safety Regulations
Whilst there is no legal requirement to have your racking inspected, however to ensure workplace safety and to prevent accidents, regular inspections should be part of your health and safety procedures, following the guidance of industry standards and safety regulations to maintain a safe working environment. The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) recommend inspections need to be carried out by competent personnel who are familiar with the relevant safety standards and guidelines, such as SEMA (Storage Equipment Manufacturers' Association) guidelines, which provide recommendations for the inspection and maintenance of storage equipment, including pallet racking. - Insurance & Liability Protection
A SARI (SEMA Approved Racking Inspector) inspection is essential for insurance sign-off. Regular inspections can help lower premiums and reduce legal risks, protecting your business from potential claims. - Cost-Effective Maintenance
Routine inspections allow early detection of wear, damage, or potential hazards, preventing them from escalating into high-risk (Red) issues. Addressing these problems early saves money and minimises operational downtime.
- New Racking Installations
Even brand-new racking must undergo an initial inspection before sign-off to ensure it meets safety and compliance standards.
Regular racking inspections are not just about compliance—they are a proactive investment in safety, efficiency, and cost savings for your business.
